TESL 01300- Unit 4 reflection- Learner's motivation

Students should have a inner motivation to learn (I need to learn English to get a job or continue
my education). I believe keeping students motivated in the class is one of major factors in teaching.
A student could have motivation at the beginning of a class but would lose it over time and sometimes
resign from the class. As Yagcioglu (2015) asserts, "motivation is a very important subject for our
students. Students can be more active and talkative, if they can be motivated with the new and modern
approaches effectively", but how can a teacher keep students motivated? A teacher can use all these
methods that are mentioned in the article but fail in motivating students. In my opinion, the teacher
should have motivation to teach and learn as well. He/she should have motivation and show it and
pass it to the students by keeping them active and trying to learn from the students. The teacher should
attract students toward themselves. If the students like their teacher and know that he/she cares about
them, they would try more and that would keep them motivated. I think keep the motivation in class is
depend on the relationship between students and the teacher. If the students feel that the teacher
appreciate their work and time and the encouragement in the class, they would try more.
