TESL 0130: UNIT 2 - reflections- ADAPTING A TEXT

Teachers would face many challenges while teaching reading and vocabulary. One of the challenges is to adapt a reading text for learners' level and needs. A teacher should consider the level of students and their needs in order to provide appropriate reading text. In many ESL classes, students are not at the same level (multi level class), and teachers should provide a reading text which would be suitable for a multi level class.
The following sample is provided by UM Learn for TESL 0130- Reading & Vocabulary course which may needs adaptation for a reading lesson regarding to students needs.

This practice will familiarize students with informal writing (writing an email to a friend). For this text sample, we might have some students who would not understand some words and also the main point of the lesson. The teacher can use group activities and communicative approach to overcome this challenge.

  • Explain new vocabularies and terms. Start the class with the discussion about email and the its role in the modern life. This would help students to have a better understanding about the new lesson and share their ideas about it.

  •  Pair students and ask them to complete the activities together. This is a good opportunity for learners to share their knowledge and learn from each other. Ask higher level students to help lower level students by paring them into groups.

  • While learners are working together, ask groups to read parts of the reading and provide feedback. Providing feedback would improve students' comprehension skill.

Digital literacy plays a big role in this modern life. As some students might not have digital knowledge, introduce the email and the internet in the class would be a great asset. The teacher can use computer lab to teach them how to create an email account and the use of it. Teacher might have higher level students to assist her/him by helping their peers.

One exercise that the teacher can use is to have students to write an email to each other and cc it to the teacher so that she/he can provide feedback on their activity. By this activity, students would learn writing an email process and improve their writing skill.

This activity could be a springboard for following classes. The outcomes of this lesson may lead to have another lesson in practicing different online communication style e.g. writing an email to the employer, search for online resources and share it by sending emails to their peers.

In my opinion this is a good activity for LINC 4, and I would use it in my class; however, I might do some changes on the activities based on my class's needs e.g. I would change the discussion activity at the end of this text to questions about new technology and email or teach them how to use email for different purposes. If my students were adults who were looking for jobs, I would change the email examples which are between two friends to the email conversations between employer and employee or if they want to pursue their education the email examples would be the conversation between a professor and a student.
