TESL 0110- unit 2- Reflections

In this unit we discussed about two teaching approaches that can be used in the ESL classroom which
are:
Deductive approach:
A deductive approach is more teacher-centered learning where the points of English grammar are explicitly
stated to the students and then tested. Once the grammar is introduced and explained, students usually
complete grammar exercises to become familiar with the pattern.
Inductive approach:
The inductive teaching approach in TESOL is a sort of discovery learning that focuses on the student. this
is when learners work out the the rule (guided discovery) for themselves by tapping into the grammar
knowledge they already have buried in their mind.
The deductive approach would save the class time and give the learners an opportunity to digest the new
lesson while inductive approach could take a lot of time and encourage students to gain deeper understanding
of a language. In the inductive approach students rely on their critical thinking to figure out the language. In
my opinion deductive approach would work better in ESL classrooms, especially for beginner levels. It will
reduce the students' nervousness about the new lesson, keep them engaged and keen them for further learning.
I reached out to one of my friends, who is an ESL teacher, and she said that most ESL learners (beginner levels)
prefer to know the rules before completing a task. They would remember the new lesson and act better in the
class activities. They would be frustrated or confused when working on a task on their own. I believe deductive
approach is suitable for beginner levels as they have minimum knowledge of English while inductive approach
is suitable for higher level students who already know about grammar rules and have enough knowledge to
complete the task. Using these methods depend on the learners and their needs.
