TESL-0120- Approaches to Listening Instruction- Unit 3 Reflections

 Myths of Listening

According to Wilson (2008), there are number of myths in teaching listening (p.21). The most interesting myth was the scripts of recordings. As Wilson (2008) mentioned, the scripts could be used for listening practices, but only at the  final stage of listening sequence  (p.24). I always had that question in my mind about giving the script to the students or not. I think for longer and academic recordings which have many information, it would be better if the teacher provide the script for the students; however, I would not suggest that for informal listening recordings. Also, teachers should remind that each listening practice has some essential points that students should notice not every word. Many listening practices have 2-3 important main ideas that students should put the focus on.
